Martha Pero, Spanish teacher at Hudson High School, was recently chosen to represent the Central States region in a national competition for Teacher of the Year
sponsored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Alexandria, VA.

Pero will be joined by representatives from the Northeast, South, Southwest, and Northwest Regions for the competition that will culminate in an announcement of the 2010 ACTFL Teacher of the Year in November 2010 at the ACTFL Convention in Boston, MA.

Martha was chosen because of her exemplary teaching skills and her extraordinary passion and dedication for foreign language teaching. Currently department chair and senior lead mentor with the Hudson City Schools in Hudson, OH, she is also an adjunct instructor at Ashland University. Martha was 2008-2009 president of the Ohio Foreign Language Association and is a popular presenter at conferences. In addition to winning two OFLA service awards, the Governor’s Educational Leadership Award, and the Hudson City Schools Distinguished Teacher Award, she has won three grants, including $20,000 for classroom technology. She won the Singer Prize for Excellence in Teaching from Harvard University in 2008, nominated by a former student, Ben Lee, who wrote:

“To this day, I am astounded by all that Señora Pero has done for me. Although my academic interests and career plans do not focus on Spanish, the lessons Señora Pero taught me rise above the boundaries between academic disciplines, and I am convinced that they will continue to enrich my life as I work toward a career in medicine.”

The Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages is a regional organization for foreign language teachers that encompasses 17 states from Colorado to Ohio. Martha was honored at a special awards presentation in Minneapolis on March 5, 2010.
